Reflective Statement - WIM

This project was to create a city alongside our creative collaborators. The collaborator I got was Constantin Brancusi. He was a modernist sculptor who focused on the relationship and connections between individuals and our own representation of ourselves. I decided to focus on using basic and smoothed shapes, with high contrast between residential and public buildings, or our personal and outward characteristics. After doing some research into Brancusi’s history and life, I decided that the city should be situated in his birth country, Romania. I also decided that the areas influenced by him should strongly contrast what already existed there, as his work was largely about making an impact and questioning conventions. The city that I finally developed is one of a collisions of styles, technology and purposes. I found Maya a lot harder than I expected. Its very different doing a tutorial you can follow side by side as opposed to doing it entirely off your own back. I found ...

Progress - WIM

Image
More progress on the digital set. All I have to do now is insert the matt painting and tweak the lights a little. Really impressed myself with how far I've come in a short space of time.

@Phil Logo typefaces

Image
After Phil's suggestion to look at professional fonts I chose the logo I like the most and tried a number of Fonts. I'm interested to see which one people think suits my city best. Would love opinions on which design is best.

@phil project logos - opinions please

I've been spending a little time on my branding as I know that this was an issue from my OGR so I decided to properly brand the project as though it were a product. Below are my ideas for the logo and I would love some feedback please.

Modelling progress - WIM

Image
So I have to admit I have found modelling off my own back in Maya a bit of a challenge. Going from tutorials that allow you to follow the video step by step to creating your own designs is quite a challenge. That said, I'm quite happy with how I'm getting on so far. At the moment I have all my key models made in basic shapes and I am currently doing the details on my train model. And this is the progress I am currently making on my train model Still working on it. Lights will have a glow on them so that they work as headlights. Need to make driver's cab and texture the interior. More pics soon!

Here are the final influence boards for the What If? Metropolis project. This is my influence map for the design of my buildings. This is the Map showing the materials and textures that I intend to use. More stuff coming in the next day or so.

Additional artists research/inspiration - WIM

Jordan recommended today that I look at existing architects who create shapes and styles similar to what I am creating, so I began by looking at Zarha Hadid's work. Zaha Hadid research by Eleanor 'Nelly' Luckett on Scribd

Potential transportation systems - WIM

Image
So the next aspect of my city that I need to consider is the method of transportation. For me, this couldn't really be a city with the traditional roads and motorways. This is not something that I believe would have appealed to Brancusi. Instead I have looked at unusual and potentially interesting transport modes to him. Wuppertal Suspension Railway The city of Wuppertal in Germany has a unique and wonderful transportation system. The Suspension monorail was created between 1898-1901 to deal with increasing pressure on the roads with the increase of the motor car. It truly is a unique sight and ultimately a very clever solution to a city's issue. It carries up to 80,000 people a day and has been upgraded so it can continue to run for years to come. Monorail systems Monorail systems have become a fascination around the world, with many being built in the 1960s. One of the most famous is the Monorail found at the Disney parks. However, they are ...

OPINIONS PLEASE!!! - Potential locations - WIM

Image
So after a conversation with Phil, my thumbnails and concept are getting to a good point. We have decided that the sinking city idea is a good one but that, along with the environmental activism portion, this would be better being parked for another project rather than clouding, muddying and complicating the concept and outcome. So we decided that the next stage was to work out where the city would be placed. It needs to be a contrast in order to get the true modernist feeling of shock. I have decided to choose all locations that played a key part in Brancusi's life; Romania, Paris and Munich. 1) Traditional Romania 2) Older Paris 3) Old Munich I'd really welcome opinions please!!!! Would love to know what you guys think would be the best contrast for an ultramodern city!
