Summer Internship with The Narrative

Image
Over the summer, I managed to get a 12 week internship with digital production company The Narrative. I was very excited by this as it gave me an opportunity to explore other uses of my skills outside of the traditional animation production route. The Narrative are a relatively new company set up by two guys who used to work for YouTube and Google, so have a large amount of experience in the digital media industry. They have worked with companies such as MTV, BBC and, while I was there, MGM on Stargate Command. My main task while at The Narrative was working on visual content for the website, as well as some website maintenance tasks and general administration. I really enjoyed my time at the company. I learnt a lot around professionalism, in terms of working in an appropriate file structure system, structuring your time effectively and being able to estimate how long tasks will take you, how to deal with clients in a professional but effective manner, and how the overall prod...

Boat tests Maya

Image
I started trying to model my pirate ship in Maya. In hindsight this wasn't the smartest plan as I hadn't nailed down the design or even drawn any orthographs for this, however I wanted to try and get an idea of how a cartoon ship would be built in Maya. Here are the screenshots from before I abandoned this modelling to create a fully realised design, and orthographs before attempting this modelling.

Below is my animatic. This has caused me a few issues, but here we go :) I also attempted to model a boat for the piece, but it was largely unsuccessful, so I decided to go back and make detailed orthographs before attempting to model this properly. https://eleanorl-caa.blogspot.com/2019/05/boat-tests-maya.html

Pugwash Sea Animation Test

Image
I decided to do a number of 2D animation tests using after effects to try out my ideas for animation styles. This is the first one of a moving 2D layered sea. This is something I am very happy with the aesthetic of.

This was our final Maya animation class of the year with Alan. I've found this very very useful and it has made me very excited for animating next year.

Today we went into our models and carefully added subtle details as well as ears. These had to be left until last due to their delicacy. These photos were before I did any work on the ears. I then went back and added to them. I'm very happy with the overall outcome from this process. Although this isn't finished, I'm hoping to work on this more prior to submission. This is, however, our last class with Alan. I have really enjoyed this process and definitely want to model more.
