Potential transportation systems - WIM

So the next aspect of my city that I need to consider is the method of transportation. For me, this couldn't really be a city with the traditional roads and motorways. This is not something that I believe would have appealed to Brancusi. Instead I have looked at unusual and potentially interesting transport modes to him.

Wuppertal Suspension Railway
The city of Wuppertal in Germany has a unique and wonderful transportation system. The Suspension monorail was created between 1898-1901 to deal with increasing pressure on the roads with the increase of the motor car. It truly is a unique sight and ultimately a very clever solution to a city's issue. It carries up to 80,000 people a day and has been upgraded so it can continue to run for years to come.

Monorail systems
Monorail systems have become a fascination around the world, with many being built in the 1960s. One of the most famous is the Monorail found at the Disney parks. However, they are found in other locations in the real world too. They are often used to transport travellers to and from airports as well as having long established systems in places such as Las Vegas as well as a huge abundance in Japan with some of these transporting up to 127,000 people a day.

China's Elevated Bus
Designed to combat the massive traffic jams on Chinese streets, a company has designed the "straddling" bus to run on tracks are the side of the road and simply glide over the top of all the other traffic.

Maglev train
Maglev trains use magnetic repulsion to push along the train. It has no moving parts and hovers slightly above the track. This reduces the friction and can therefore allow a more efficient use of energy and faster speeds. The fastest speed recorded was 375mph in 2015.

Hyperloop
Hyperloop is a mode of transport currently still in development. In short it is a reduced-pressure tube through which pressurised pods move. The reduced pressure also reduces friction, allowing the pods to move at speeds of up to 760mph. This is currently being developed in California by SpaceX and Musk. Once concerns about safety, in the event of disruption, power cut or terrorist attack have been addressed, this could easily revolutionise the way that we make long distance journeys.

I now need to work out how the transportation system will be incorporated into my city and which mode I think works best. At the moment I am thinking one of the monorail type systems but we shall see. Watch this space!
