Info-graphic thumbnails

We were tasked with creating a info-graphic title sequence for a TV show or movie, and to create a new opening. The show I chose was Doctor Who I then decided to do a graphical representation of each of the Doctors, with the intention of turning them into a short sequence.  1st Doctor  2nd Doctor  3rd Doctor  4th Doctor  5th Doctor  6th Doctor  7th Doctor  8th Doctor  9th Doctor  10th Doctor  11th Doctor  12th Doctor 13th (current) Doctor   I then turned these into an animated GIF to try and quickly give an idea of what this may look like when finished.

Today I did some experimentations with news paper and alternate drawing methods. I'm quite pleased with the results. The warm up excersises were done with a straw with charcoal taped to the end. I then started working on the newspaper to see what happened.

Understanding the Captain Pugwash style

Image
In starting out on the Captain Pugwash project, I decided the first key step was to understand how the Spirit of the animation is portrayed, and how to capture this. I also wanted to start identifying the aesthetic components. I started out by drawing existing assets in order to understand construction. I then began dissecting the characters and looking at specific facial features that are present within the existing assets.  I then began trying to construct myself as a small child in the style, however I don’t think they fit well into the aesthetic, so I decided to return to the existing assets to research more.  I redrew some characters as well as watching some of the animations that I could find online. I think this gave me a much better understanding, although not perfect, of how to construct the characters.  I then began to try to figure out how to create myself within the aesthetic world, from old photographs of me. Above are two o

Today we had a task to attempt to refine and expand our ideas for thesis proposal. We wrote down our two part concept, and then passed the paper around to get a kind of crowdsourced research. I found this very useful as it gave me ideas and examples I hadn’t thought of or expected. Below are the ideas I was given, along with some notes of my own and comments on the ideas. “Others” & Hollywood “Others” being defined as disabled, dwarfs, “non-ideal” artists etc.  Questions Is it the goal to discuss the lack of disabled artists in Hollywood? - Yes as part of a wider discussion.  What is otherness and how is it defined? - I intend to base my idea of Otherness upon characteristics commonly rejected or segregated from society, throughout time, whether through accessibility or social behaviours. This will not however cover race or sexuality, more on disabled and circus skill performers (eg contortionists etc). Thinking more along the line of the Victorian Freak Sh

We started off by doing a series of one minute drawings. We then did some 15 minute drawings, which I chose to do on black paper with coloured pastels. This is a method that seems to work well for me.  Sharon then sat for longer, 30 minute poses. I really enjoyed these because of the amount of detail I was able to put in, and the final results.

Permission for Captain Pugwash idea

Today I received a lovely email from John Ryan's daughter giving me permission to use the assets in my project, and mentioning an exhibition and workshop that I can go to. I'm very excited to start this project and hopefully move forward to produce a fun and interesting film.

The day I met Captain Pugwash Many people have an inspiring story that lead them to animation. I think mine is one of the more topsy  turvy paths. Thinking back, my first experience of animation , outside of watching movies or TV, was a chance meeting with a truly incredible man, who created amazing adventures and wonderful worlds from his own garden shed. The gentleman I met was John Ryan, the creator of Captain Pugwash. I was about 5 years old. I was at a business meeting/party with my mum in a big fancy hotel. I remember feeling incredibly small and unimportant compared to all the tall, well dressed men. They were all drinking posh alcohol (I think it was port), and smoking large cigars. To me, from my tiny young point of view, they looked like giant mythical creatures of great knowledge. All of these creatures were bustling around, shaking hands and making booming, raucous chuckles. I felt very out of place but was also delighted by how busy and fine everything was. Clingin
