@Phil Working story ideas

The three objects I was given for my narrative to be based on were: a Toy Maker, An Airport and a Microscope.

I immediately found some ideas beginning to form in my head and develop themselves, winding into a plot that I quite like, whereas other ideas required much more in depth thinking and development and I don't find them quite as intuitive.

I have basically ended up with two workable plots, which I have nicknamed (for now) "The Scanner Incident" and "Childhood Sweethearts".

"The Scanner Incident"

  • Opens with shot showing "childs" leg being shoved into a suitcase
  • See Toy maker trying to board flight with suitcase - goes through scanner - "body" shows up
  • Toy Maker interigated and explains - suitcase is opened
  • Flashback showing him creating doll with incredible detail - magnifying glasses, letter from little girl on desk - sister very ill, doll is way to make her feel better.
NB - from here out TM = Toy Maker

Act 1

Dark candle lit room, suitcase in corner with leg sticking out. TM goes over and closes suitcase pushing foot in. Candle is blown out and screen goes dark.

Act 2

Brief establishing shot of airport exterior. TM carrying suitcase approaching scanner. Suitcase on bag xray, TM goes through standing one fine. Security notice the "body" in the bag when in the scanner. TM taken into the interviewing room and explains what's actually in the case.

Act 3

TM's workshop. Close up of TM holding letter - lowers down. Toy sat on table in front, Toy Maker puts finishing touches to it. TM getting suitcase from top of the cupboard. Toy sat in suitcase. Shot of sick little girl hugging toy - baggage lable on case behind.

"Childhood Sweethearts"

  • Old lady looking out of a plane window with gift box in her lap
  • Over shoulder shot of old man watching plane leave. Looks down.
  • B/W flashback to childhood - sat under tree, picnic, binoculars watching birds etc.
  • "" Man leaving with suitcases. Woman crying.
  • "" More letters dropping
  • Back to colour - woman opening gift on plane - models of her and man as in flash back. Cries
  • Man looking back at photograph from that day crying.
  • Plane flies into cloud.

Act 1

Shot showing out of plane window. Close up of gift box and label. Man watching plane leave. Looking at photograph.

Act 2

B/W flashback. Childhood picnic, leaving with suitcases, letters

Act 3

Woman opening gift. Photograph and crying. Plane into cloud.

I am currently working on character designs and hope to have these up tomorrow.
More to come soon!!!

  1. Hello! Just wondering where the microscope comes into both these scenarios?

  2. Indeed - that pesky microscope...

So - I'm just going to throw some ideas at you (don't rush in character design stuff just yet!).

I can imagine a twist when it's revealed that the 'world' of your story is, in fact, being viewed down the microscope of some extraterrestrial intelligence and that the earth and its people and it's places are mere toys... (so this uses the microscope to re-frame everything?).

I can imagine a story about a scientist who always wanted to be a toymaker....

I can imagine a story in which at the airport the luggage of two different characters gets mixed up on the carousel leading to some kind of revelation...

I can imagine a story where two rival toymakers go to extreme lengths to perfect the most amazing toy (needing a microscope to deal with the inner workings) and how at the airport on their way to the 'Toy Awards' something happens to them...

I can imagine an idea where the 'Toymaker' relates to a scientist who tweaks the genetic code of animals/people in order to create new outlandish things - with sinister/comedic consequences...
